Sustainable Fashion Brands To Shop At

The fashion industry is no stranger to nonethical practices when it comes to manufacturing. There is an increasing need for brands to become sustainable and with many new brands coming out and claiming to be it is hard to see who is actually putting in the work.

What makes a brand sustainable:

Certifications: Globally recognized certifications such as GOTS, Oeko-Tex, Better Cotton Initiative, Bluesign, Certified B-Corp, and Fair Trade are the most popular ones. Many of these certifications help create an overall understanding of how committed the brand is to sustainability.

  • Wages: Economic sustainability is a big part of the brand’s commitment. Garment workers are one the most underpaid professionals around the globe. Fair wages for all employees are important and eliminate things such as sweatshops, child labor, and unsafe working conditions.

  • Materials: Certain textiles can be harmful to the environment such as rayon and acrylic. It is better for brands to use more ethical textiles like Wool, silk, flax, hemp, linen, okra, and bamboo are all great alternatives to clothes made from non-biodegradable materials like polyester and nylon. Some brands have also created their own sustainable textiles. For example, Hugo Boss created textile fibers from pineapple leaves to use in their shoes.

We have put together a list of brands that are committed to sustainability long-term and are honest about how their clothing is made.
