How to Make a Moodboard

Moodboards play a big part in the creative process and many creative industries use them, from event planning to graphic design.

What is a Moodboard?

  • A moodboard is also known as an inspirational board and is a tool that helps you visualize your ideas and help put them together. The board includes color palettes, images, descriptive words, and sometimes material samples. Moodboards are extremely helpful in creative projects.

Why You Should Use a Moodboard

  • A variety of different professionals use moodbaords, from interior designers to event planners and fashion designers. Moodboards are great for communicating your ideas with others and redefining them. They are used when expressing your creative ideas to clients and giving them a visual representation of your ideas. There are two types of moodboards, digital and physical. Traditional moodboards are physical and use craft materials and images on a board to convey your ideas. Digital moodboards allow you to seamlessly use images from the internet. Platforms like Pinterest and Canva are examples of places where you can create digital moodboards.

How to start

  • You can start creating your moodboard by brainstorming ideas using keywords, colors, materials, and images from Pinterest, Unsplash, Instagram, and magazines.

  • Grab fabrics, materials, and color swatches to add for inspiration to your moodboard. Take time to collect pieces that will help your moodboard harmonize and avoid clashing that will complicate your overall theme of the moodboard.
