5 Things You Didn’t Know About André Leon Talley

 
 

Andre Leon Talley played a major role in the fashion industry and with a career spanning six decades, documentaries, reality TV shows, and compromising books, his influence was legendary. There are many people who knew him as just being the former editor-at-large of Vogue magazine, but Talley has done many remarkable and interesting things throughout his life. Here are 5 facts about the fashion trailblazer that you didn’t know:

  • In 1974 Talley was an unpaid apprentice for the legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He credits Vreeland as being his writing mentor.

  • From 1978 to 1980 Talley lived in France where he utilized his French skills by becoming the latter publication’s Paris bureau chief at W and Women’s Wear Daily. 

  • Talley attended an HBCU before attending Brown University. He attended his first years of college at North Carolina Central University, in Durham, North Carolina. At North Carolina Central he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French literature.

  • In 2018, Talley acted as a style advisor to Michelle Obama. He advised the Obama family on fashion and introduced Michelle Obama to Jason Wu. Ever since then Obama bought many dresses from Taiwanese designer. 

  • He worked as a park ranger in Washington D.C. and Maryland, where he told visitors about slaves who built Fort Washington and sometimes he dressed up as a Civil War soldier.
